St Michael's Grammar School Launches Global School Partnership

St Michael’s Grammar School welcomed Mr Jackson Muthini this week from St Michael’s Secondary School in Mukuru, Nairobi, Kenya. The two schools have established a partnership through the Global Schools initiative. Mr Muthini will spend a week in St Michael’s, teaching lessons, shadowing staff and talking to students about global educational issues. The two schools intend to work on a project that addresses the local and global concerns of substance and drug abuse. Students will research and examine the personal, health and social causes and affects of substance and drug abuse in the Craigavon and Mukuru areas. Students will compare and contrast similarities and differences. The project will also see students from both schools using ICT to help disseminate their findings and project work.

The Launch of Mukuru 2013

The launch of the Mukuru 2013 trip took place this week in St Michaels. Year 14 students had an opportunity to speak to all students about their experience in Mukuru during June 2012. Applications are now invited from students in Year 13 and Year 14 who are interested in travelling to Mukuru as part of the school visit in June 2013. Students must be aware of the criteria for selection. Applicants must be able to fulfil all the requirements laid out in the PowerPoint (click link below). It is a tremendous opportunity that comes highly recommended by all the students who have availed of it in recent years.

MUKURU TRIP 21st June- 2nd July 2012

This year 20 students and 4 members of staff embarked on this our 5th visit to the Mukuru slums. It was, once again, a life changing experience for our students and staff all of whom had worked so tirelessly throughout the year fundraising. The St Michaels Immersion Project in Kenya has, since 2007, raised significant funds from within the local Lurgan community -and beyond- enabling the completion of the first phase of the Project. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the wider school community we were able to see the construction and completion of a permanent residential home for streetboys. The home- named the Mary Immaculate Home- houses over 70 boys –taking them from the dangerous streets and providing a roof over their heads with proper washing facilities and ,perhaps most important of all, giving them a skills based education which hopefully will help them have a better future.

 Mukuru2012

We are now in the 2nd phase of our Project and we were able to see for ourselves just how the work is progressing in St Michaels- the only secondary school in Mukuru- and the focus of our 2nd phase. To date the new classrooms and toilet block have been completed and, thanks to work coming in below budget, the Sisters were also able to construct a new sports pitch. Whilst there our students presented a cheque for £24,000 to Sr Mary, the Director of MPC, Sr Angela, the Principal of St Michaels Mukuru, and Sr Sally the Sponsorship Director. We also brought with us 48 huge kit bags filled with donated clothing and shoes for the children in the local primary school,- St Catherine’s -as well as baby clothing for the Mukuru medical centre for babies. While there our students spent valuable time teaching the children and working with the streetboys. Possibly for the first time in their lives they were able to experience, albeit temporarily, what it is like to be really poor. We want to express our sincere gratitude to all the local GAA and football /rugby/camogie clubs and everyone else who so generously supported our Project by donating strips, shoes etc throughout the year.

For the next stage of our Project we are hoping to fund the building of a new Science block consisting of 2 large classrooms/laboratories and storage units. It is also our aim to equip these science laboratories. We hope to launch our 2012-13 fundraising programme in the local parishes this October.

We are really pleased to announce the visit of Mr Jackson Muthini, the Vice Principal of St Michaels Secondary School in Mukuru. Jackson will arrive on the 30th September on a Global Partnership visit- sponsored by the Global Partnership Organisation. We are hoping that Jackson will meet with as many groups as possible during his stay with us. For further information please follow the links on this page and also on Facebook.
